Preventive Dentistry

We understand the importance of preventive dentistry. It is, without a doubt, the most important weapon in your arsenal of defense against dental disease. After all, it’s much better to prevent problems than to fix them after they arise. For this reason, we will present to you many valuable tools and techniques for prevention.

Regular Cleanings and Checkups

This is the best way for us to make sure that your dental health is protected. When we are able to examine your teeth regularly, we can keep an eye out for problems and nip them in the bud, so that you don’t develop bigger problems down the road. We help you protect your gums from gingivitis and the even more serious periodontitis by performing cleanings to remove plaque and tartar. Having these services performed twice a year, for most patients, is a critical step to enjoying your healthy smile for a lifetime.

Fluoride Treatment

It’s well known that fluoride in your drinking water and in toothpastes can strengthen the enamel of your teeth and help prevent decay. Fluoride makes the outer shell of the teeth harder and more resistant to decay and erosion. We go one step further by offering patients in-office fluoride treatments for an extra level of protection, as well as a take-home prescription level fluoride toothpaste. Dr. Meares will discuss the benefits of additional fluoride and if it is necessary and applicable to your condition.

Dr. Meares is pleased to offer patients the peace of mind of oral cancer screening using the Velscope assessment system. This technology is the world-wide leader in detection of oral tissue abnormalities. In addition to a traditional visual exam, we offer you the added benefit of this state-of-the-art service.

Periodontal Treatment

Preventive dentistry aims to prevent periodontal disease. We can also help treat the disease, should it arise. Our periodontal treatment is a process that focuses on restoring your gum health. Periodontal treatment can reverse the stages of gingivitis for healthy gums and teeth.

The treatment provided includes a periodontal examination, which is a gentle probing and helps us discover problem areas around the gum line. Once Dr. Meares has completed your thorough exam, this may include scaling and root planing if indicated, which is a deep cleaning between the gums and teeth that reaches all the way down to the root of the tooth. In addition to scaling and root planing, our hygienist may use Arestin to ensure the complete eradication of bacteria. Arestin is an antibiotic that can be inserted into the space between the gum and the tooth. Arestin releases antibiotic gradually, which kills bacteria that cause periodontal infection. We follow up with periodontal maintenance appointments in order to ensure that your gum health is restored. Dr. Meares will team up with your hygienist, Michelle, to recommend the proper treatment approach. Once affected by periodontal disease, your risk factors will need to be addressed for a lifetime in order to prevent recurrence.

Aphthous Ulcers/Mouth Sore Treatment

Mouth sores, often caused by aphthous ulcers, can be unsightly and painful. If you have a sore that won’t go away, we offer treatment that helps heal sores quickly and painlessly. We offer in-office low level laser treatment to heal your mouth sore. The lasers are completely safe, painless and effective.  The light energy quickly disinfects the sore and seals off nerve endings to relieve you of your pain. The procedure is affordable and guaranteed to speed your healing time. It is important to treat areas as early as possible. If we can treat the area before it erupts, we can prevent it from even surfacing.
